Bismillah hir Rahman -nir-Raheem
Distinguished UN Resident Coordinator, H.E. Niels Scott, Honorable Chancellor, Excellencies, esteemed Faulty members of MNU; respected panelists; dear students, ladies and Gentlemen,
Assalaam Alaikum and a very good afternoon.
I am honored to join you today at this significant event jointly organized by the UN Maldives and the National University and, commemorating Human Rights Day and International Migrants Day. I extend my heartfelt thanks for the invitation to be part of this important occasion.
Today's film screening and panel discussion provide a vital platform to explore the intrinsic link between human rights and migrant workers—a topic of profound relevance to the Maldives.
According to the Maldives Census 2022, our nation hosts more than 132,000 foreign migrant workers, constituting about 26% of the total population. These individuals are integral to our economy, significantly contributing to sectors such as tourism, construction, health, and education. Their labor not only drives economic growth but also enriches the social and cultural fabric of our society.
Despite their substantial contributions, many migrant workers face challenges, including discrimination, exploitation, and limited access to essential services. Reports indicate that a significant number of these workers are undocumented, further exacerbating their vulnerabilities.
It is imperative that we recognize and uphold the rights of migrant workers, ensuring they are treated with dignity and respect. This includes providing safe and fair working conditions, access to healthcare, and protection from exploitation. Upholding these rights is not only a moral obligation but also essential for the sustainable development of our nation.
As we engage in today's discussions, let us reaffirm our commitment to protecting the human rights of all individuals, regardless of their origin, where they come from. By fostering an inclusive society that values the contributions of migrant workers, we pave the way for a more equitable and prosperous future for the Maldives.
