National Children's Day Message by UN Interim Resident Coordinator, Mr. Niels Scott
National Children's Day 2025 - UN Interim Resident Coordinator's Message
Hello and warm greetings to all children, families, educators, and caregivers across the Maldives.
On behalf of the United Nations, I wish you a joyful and meaningful Children's Day.
We know that every child's best start in life begins with a family that offers love, care, and protection. But right now in the Maldives, many families are under pressure. More and more are separating, and that's placing huge emotional and financial strain on single parents—especially mothers. It's also leaving too many children at risk.
We're seeing the effects. Reports show that a growing number of children—mostly teenage boys—are getting caught up in substance abuse, violence, and gang activity. Many are ending up in conflict with the law, and some are even being sent to detention. In some cases, children in state care are being returned to homes that may not be safe. And sadly, there have also been reports of self-harm.
Communities—to step in earlier and help families when they're struggling.
But this can change—and we can change it together.
We need to do more to support families before things fall apart. That means better access to parenting support, counseling services, and safe alternatives for children who cannot remain at home. It means ensuring that children in care are not left behind—and that they grow up with dignity and hope.
We also need stronger coordination—between government, schools, NGOs, and Communities—to step in earlier and help families when they're struggling.
As Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu recently reminded us, this day is also an opportunity to educate children about their rights, and about the hopes their parents, communities, and the nation hold for them. In this respect, I would also like to acknowledge the important role played by the newly appointed Child Rights Ombudsperson, Ms. Niumath Shafeeg.
The good news is, we have the tools. We know what works. Now we need the collective will to act.
This Children's Day, let's make a promise—that no child will be left to face hardship alone. That every child in the Maldives will grow up safe, supported, and surrounded by care. Because at the heart of every thriving child is a loving, stable environment. Or as UNICEF reminds us today: "For every child - a family."
Thank you, and happy Children's Day
